Book Review: Street God

Image Credit: Amazon
Street God by Pastor Dimas Salaberrios is an impacting memoir of his re-telling of coming up in the mean and dangerous streets of Queens, NY and his life changing encounter with Jesus Christ.

His addiction to power and success led to poor choices, sending Dimas—twice—to New York City’s Rikers Island, one of the toughest and most notorious jails in the nation. He narrowly escaped death numerous times, including when a vengeful hustler pointed a gun at his head at point-blank range and pulled the trigger. Dimas now acknowledges that, for every poor choice he made in his youth, God placed a barrier to redirect him, sent an angel to protect him, or provided a message to touch him. Dimas shares his story in his memoir, Street God: The Explosive Story of a Former Drug Boss on the Run from the Hood—and the Courageous Mission That Drove Him Back*

I read this 284 page book in just two days. Pastor Dimas takes you on the journey of his personal testimony that winds down the road of drug dealing and eventual drug addiction making this book too engaging to put down.  He provides vivid accounts of his dealings in the world of drugs and the mayhem that it caused. His desire to be, as he refers to it, a "street god" took him down a path of incarceration that nearly cost him his life.  I laughed and even cried as I read through the pages marveling at how the Lord transforms the life of those who are the least of these.

From Bible smuggling mission trips to China to personally delivering food and money to an orphanage in Kenya you will be amazed as he shares his accounts of all the miracles and signs that the Lord preformed to strengthen his faith in Him.

I do have to share my dislike for the cover of the book.

I recommend this book especially for gifting to young men who are snared in the trappings of this world.  I will actually be gifting my copy hoping that it will serve as a vehicle to show how Jesus can transform and regenerate the life of those who surrender to HIM.

As I sit here typing this review, an appropriate quote comes to my mind concerning this book which is: There is no pit so deep, that God's love is not deeper still - Corrie Ten Boom.

Book Review: NKJV Study Bible for Kids

NKJV Study Bible for Kids is chock full of features that will be sure to inspire your child to get to reading God's Word.

This Bible incorporates the accuracy of the New King James Version translation of the Bible into an inviting format which captivates the reader at first glance.

My daughter was immediately drawn to the bright colors and the overall look of this Bible.  She immediately took hold of it and wanted to get into the Word.

As I thumbed through the Bible, I immediately noticed the bright colored page edges in an ombre detail.  Each page also has a fan tab that lists the book, chapter and verse.  That will be most helpful to those who are just starting to read the Bible until they are familiar with were each book is located.

Although, there are quite a few additional features, I find each of them to be helpful to the reader.

Behind the Scenes: Bible book introductions including author, dates, key passages, and highlights;

Spotlight: God's big plan - how He worked in Bible times and how He works today;

Starring Roles: Biographies of key people in the Bible;

On Location: Colorful maps to help find Bible locations and events

You might think the font would be small to make room for all the extra content but not so.  The typeface provides ease of reading for children to be able to follow along. Hardcover books are made with durability in mind, great option since this Bible is for children!

Another feature that was well thought out is the Articles Index.  If the child wants to refer to biblical passages on sharing with others or obedience, they can refer to the page number listed and it will take them directly to the passage that talks about that particular topic.

There is also a ribbon marker to  keep tabs on where your little reader read last.

This is a beautifully done children's Bible.  If you are gifting a Bible to a loved one for an upcoming birthday or even for the holidays that are quickly approaching, I would HIGHLY recommend this one!
